Kate Spade, 55, was found dead from an apparent suicide in her New York City apartment on Tuesday, June 5.
According to sources, Spade hung herself with a red scarf around her neck attached to a doorknob. Later to be discovered by her housekeeper — leaving a note at the scene. Her husband, Andy Spade, was home when she took her life.
Kate Spade started her career at the magazine Mademoiselle in 1986 to which she met Andy, whom she married in 1994. Andy, the brother of actor David Spade, launched Kate Spade New York in 1993 which became very successful clothing and jewelry line.
Kate sold the company in 2007 and launched a new handbag brand named Frances Valentine in 2016. Earlier in the year Kate told NPR that she had changed her name to Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan Spade.
“We are all devastated by today’s tragedy. We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time,” her family said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Kate is survived by her 13-year-old daughter Frances.
