At about 7:20am, a device exploded in the subway passageway between Times Square and the Port Authority in midtown Manhattan.
Police arrested a 27 year old, Akayed Ullah,NYPD commissioner James O’Neill said.
Four people suffered minor injuries from the blast, no life threatening injuries.
Officials told the Associated Press that Ullah is speaking with police at the hospital, and that he was inspired by international terror groups. Ullah told investigators he did it in the name of ISIS to avenge the deaths of Muslims.
According to police, Akayed used Velcro and zip ties to attach the bomb made from a pipe, a 9-volt battery, matches and Christmas tree lights all attached to to his body.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said it appeared the suspect acted alone.
“All we know of is one individual who, thank God, was unsuccessful in his aims,” de Blasio said.
Ullah came to the United States from Bangladesh with an immigrant visa on Feb. 21, 2011. He is a legal permanent resident with a green card.
Subway and bus services resumed nearly full service by late Monday afternoon. De Blasio said there are no specific or credible threats known to New York at this time, and by all indications the suspect acted alone.
